Platform Comparison

StudyDent vs DentPass

A direct comparison of the two UK BDS-specific revision platforms — what each covers, where each falls short, and which one is right for your year and dental school.

By the StudyDent team·University of Cambridge & King's College London

DentPass and StudyDent are the two platforms built specifically around the UK BDS curriculum, as opposed to generic medical revision tools like Passmedicine or BMJ OnExamination which target UKMLA and MRCP candidates and are not mapped to the dental degree.

This comparison is written by the StudyDent team. We have tried to be factual and accurate about DentPass. Competitor details are based on publicly available information — check DentPass's own website for their current feature set.

StudyDent

StudyDent was built by dental and science students at the University of Cambridge and King's College London specifically to cover the entire UK BDS curriculum — all 16 dental schools, Years 1–5.

  • Question bank: 10,000+ practice questions across 50+ topic areas, all curriculum-mapped to the UK BDS programme. Every question includes a detailed written explanation. Both MCQs and EMQs.
  • Coverage: All 16 UK dental schools. Years 1–5.
  • 3D anatomy: Fully interactive head and neck atlas with 100+ individually selectable structures across 7 categories — bones, teeth, muscles, arteries, veins, glands, and cartilage. Every structure annotated with nerve supply, blood supply, and surgical relevance.
  • Radiograph and clinical scenario prep: Radiograph interpretation questions (periapical, bitewing, panoramic, cephalometric) and clinical scenario questions across prescribing, patient management, and clinical reasoning.
  • Analytics: Topic-level accuracy, progress over time, weakness detection.
  • Free tier: 200 questions with full explanations — permanent, no credit card required.

DentPass

DentPass is built around the UK BDS curriculum with a focus on timed mock exams that replicate the format and difficulty of actual BDS assessments. It is worth noting that at the time of writing, DentPass is primarily focused on Year 1 content, with expansion to later years ongoing.

  • Question bank: Smaller than StudyDent's 10,000+.
  • Coverage: Primarily Year 1 at present. Does not cover all 16 UK dental schools.
  • 3D anatomy: Not available.
  • Analytics: Limited topic-level analytics compared to StudyDent.
  • Free tier: No — requires a paid subscription to access content.

DentPass is best suited to Year 1 BDS students whose school uses an assessment format closely matched by the DentPass exam simulation.

Verdict

For most UK BDS students — particularly those in Years 2–5 or at any school outside DentPass's current coverage — StudyDent is the stronger all-round choice. The 10,000+ question bank, the 3D anatomy atlas, radiograph practice, topic-level analytics, and the permanent free tier are not matched by DentPass at present.

If you are specifically in Year 1 and your school's assessment format closely matches DentPass's mock exam structure, it is worth evaluating. The two platforms are not mutually exclusive — some students use both.

By year of study

  • Year 1: StudyDent for oral biology, anatomy, pathology, pharmacology foundations. The 3D anatomy atlas is useful from day one.
  • Year 2–3: StudyDent — DentPass's Year 2–3 content is still expanding. StudyDent covers the full transition into clinical subjects.
  • Year 4–5 and finals: StudyDent — comprehensive revision across all 50+ topics. DentPass limited at this level.
  • DF1 trainees: StudyDent for pharmacology, oral medicine, and radiograph interpretation.
